Britney Spears Wore 2017's Biggest Beauty Trends Back In The 2000s

Every decade has its breakout stars and mainstay trendsetters — and Britney Spears dominated both roles in the 2000s. She was (briefly) America's sweetheart, an "It Girl" through and through, and a rebellious provocateur — depending on which part of the decade you rewind to.

Long before Instagram, Netflix, and Spotify, we tuned into MTV to see what was cool — and Spears was the queen of everything that touched pop music. Read: She performed alongside Michael Jackson, kissed Madonna (which spurred countless headlines), and recorded with stars like Rihanna.

While some of the trends she's best known for have long been retired — ahem, denim formalwear and pigtails— many looks she ushered into the fashion and beauty zeitgeist stuck around past the death of our first iPods. In fact, many are popular again today.

Click ahead for a deep dive into the trends that Spears made huge in the aughts — and are back in a big way.

Glossy Lips

Lip gloss was poppin' in the early 2000s. Naturally, Spears was on the trend. For proof, let's rewind to when the star was honoured with her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame back in 2003 when she matched her bubblegum pink fur coat to her megawatt shiny gloss.

Now, thanks to Kim Kardashian's KKW Beauty and Rihanna's Fenty Beauty, it's clear that glassy lips are going to be back — and possibly bigger than ever, in 2018.

For MTV's Mardi Gras party in 2002, Spears wore two huge trends: the glossy lip and the newsboy cap (which is also back in a big way right now).

Piecey, Feathered Bangs

Curtain fringe has proved to be one of the biggest fall trends — and will continue to be huge well into 2018. While Spears has had a storied hair evolution with tons of looks, we can't let the feathered bang (a slightly more piecey version of curtain fringe) be forgotten.

Bright Blush

Cream blush is being saved at a record rate on Pinterest right now because many are looking for a flattering, just-stepped-in-from-the-cold flush. As you can see here, Spears rocked a trendy pop of colour on the apples of her cheeks way before we were pinning wish lists from the couch.

Belly Button Rings

The piercing trend of the 2000s was the belly button ring. Sparkly, dangly, and just a little bit scandalous, Spears showed off her navel gems whenever she had the chance. And believe it or not, the look is back.

Brow Bone Strobing

Now it seems like highlighting our brow bone is just par for the course when applying makeup in 2017. But, as Spears proves — it's nothing new.
