Bored of Slade and Mariah? Why not try out Refinery29 UK's Christmas indie playlist! Warning: bands in skinny jeans find Christmas very, very depressing.

Julian Casablancas - "I Wish It Was Christmas Today"

Originally a Saturday Night Live skit, perhaps the notoriously dour Strokes frontman does have a sense of humour after all. Anyway, this is one of the only new contributions to the Christmas song canon since Mariah.

Sufjan Stevens - "O Come, O Come Emmanuel"

For someone so miserable, Sufjan sure loves Christmas; he made a whole album about it, 2006's Songs For Christmas. Fear not, though, this is still as depressing as that John Lewis ad.

The Walkmen - "The Christmas Party"

We all get a little reflective at Christmas time, so we can all relate to sitting with "a belly full of wine" and thinking of the one that got away.

Death Cab For Cutie - "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"

Rolling Stone placed Darlene Love's original version of this song number one in The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs Of All Time but for these purposes – the purposes being indie – we've gone with Death Cab For Cutie's reimagining.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "All I Want For Christmas"

Don't confuse this with the Mariah song; this is an original track that YYYs released back in 2008. It's a winner.
