Once upon a time it was considered absolutely normal to spend your afternoon around a tea table, nibbling on a scone, cutting in to a rich fruit cake or adding a third sugar to a cup of Earl Grey. We rarely wish that we could live like they do in Downton Abbey – we couldn't take the Dowager Countess's side eye
– but the good old days certainly had some things going for it i.e. sandwiches and cakes and caffeine.
If you feel like we do, then this is your week. From 8th-14th August the UK is celebrating Afternoon Tea Week
with pretty plates and teacups up and down the country. If you feel that your afternoons need an injection of caffeine or that your life just doesn't have enough scones in it, then we know where to go. We have hunted down the crème de la crème of afternoon teas in London, whether you're looking for classical elegance, tea which gets you tipsy, or something a little bit different.
